Capiz is a translucent shell prized for the way it catches and softens light. It’s often called mother of pearl, and the two names are used interchangeably, though technically they are different materials: capiz comes from the flat, translucent windowpane oyster shell, while mother of pearl is the iridescent inner lining of other oyster and mollusk shells. Each piece is set by hand, so the pattern is a little different every time. On our trays and lazy susans, the capiz is hand-set as an inlay over a wood base and sealed with lacquer, so you get the shimmer of shell with a sturdy, wipe-clean finish.

Wipe it clean with a soft, damp cloth. That is all it needs. Don’t submerge it or let it soak. It can get wet, but dry it off rather than leaving it damp, since the wood base and the rattan rim don’t do well staying wet, and rattan can mold if it stays damp. The trays and lazy susans are food safe for serving, but the finish isn’t scratch resistant, so serve from them rather than cut or eat directly on them, since a fork or knife can scratch the surface.
